Your Family vs. Your Wedding, Part 50

I had a very productive weekend, by the way. I celebrated my niece's birthday, saw The Artist (which rocked btw, so GO), went to Disneyland with some good friends, wrote two articles, and then cleared out the dead emails in my constant contact account. The dead emails are brides that I've sent multiple emails to, who don't open them, or hardly ever open them. Some are the wrong email address (I curse the typo fairy that lives in my mirror!), some are going straight into their spam folder for some reason, and some people just aren't interested. And if you're not interested, I'm not going to waste your time.

So, I was going through multiple lists, cleaning them out, and one email kept popping up over and over. If they had clicked on nothing else for the past two months, they clicked on the "Liz's Daily Wedding Quote" that I sent out on 12/16/11. And the majority of those clicked on the link to the actual post that it was pulled from.
The hell? I thought. I kept going, and then finally when I finished, I pulled up the article myself:

One of my brides has a brother who refused to come to her wedding if his kids aren't invited. I know, right?? But how can she have her nieces there and not invite other children? Well, she can make them members of the wedding party, which would give them a reason to be there and explain why no other tykes are present. Or, she could just have them there and offer no explanation at all. If you're in the same situation and worried about how your other guest will feel, I vote wedding party. It's a little easier to take if they're they're dolled up. Foot your brother with the bill for the dress.

My Wedding Weekend

Two bridal shows, one open house, no waiting!

First stop was the Bridal Expo in downtown L.A., taking advantage of the free tickets they were kind enough to send me. Wasn't that sweet? This cake is by Bailey's Bakery.
You know what was really sad for me? I got there so late, I missed all the cake samples. Can you imagine? But I did get there so late that when I found the booth with the freshwater pearl earrings, I was actually able to get near it.
And I did find a lot of great deals that I'm putting in the Wedding Wise this week. The highlight of the show? THIS:

No, see the photo booth? IS the TV. Yes, I'm a geek, but think about how much fun this will be at your wedding. How much? Rates for the itouch booth start at $895 for the smaller screen, depending on the features you want. I know, I'm a geek. But seriously? Pretty cool.

On Sunday, I dropped by the Premiere Bridal show at the Hyatt Westlake. The Hyatt and I are old friends. Food for days. Cake and cupcakes and whole buffet meals as far as the eye can see. $10 got me lunch and drinks, it was fantastic. Speaking of which:

Not just for the cocktail hour, but this would be fantastic for a cocktail and appetizer reception. So much food, and after I made my usual third pass by (plus the one I did after I filmed this) I was full. Something to think about. You can find them at www.simigreenacres.com.

I finished Sunday by heading all the way across town to the Ebell Los Angeles. I was in bed reading the Sunday paper - which is what I do every Sunday morning, when I saw a story about their open house. I LOVE the Ebell, especially after Angele and Reggie's wedding there in July. They were having an open house and a sort of membership drive, too, and oh, those applications went fast.
What always amazes me is how one space can look fifteen different ways, depending on how it's decorated. For instance, here is the grand hall during the Open House:

The Radisson Hotel in Whittier has a good wedding reception package right now, if you have 100 or less guests - $50 per person, choose from 5 different entrees (yes, there is steak in there). Champagne toast, cider and "free-flowing" fruit punch. One hour chocolate fountain (!), and they'll even through in colored sashes for the chairs. For $40 more a person, you get a hosted bar for an hour, including beer, wine and soft drinks (I know you were wondering), and a wedding cake made to order. Add a candy station on top of that for another $5 per person.

A Love Letter to the Newbie Brides

Dear Newbie Bride:

Let me be the 50th person to congratulate you on your engagement. Welcome to Wedding World!

You’re going to love it.

First of all, at the end of all this, you’re going to be married to the love of your life. That’s cool. Second of all, Wedding World is very, very pretty, so you’ll have a lot of neat stuff to look at for the next few months. Third of all, you are going to learn so much. Not just about weddings, but about yourself, your relationship with the love of your life, and more importantly, about what you do and do not want, in general.

Here’s a hint: Just like in life, you can have pretty much whatever you want at your wedding, using whatever it is that you already have. Yes, I’m talking about money, but I’m also talking about personal skills and resources, and time. Time is very important in wedding world – you have plenty of it. Even if you don’t think you do, you do.

Ah, yes, money. Things can get kind of expensive in Wedding World. This can be daunting for those of who can’t spend untold thousands of dollars on one day. If you can’t afford it, then don’t spend it. Bottom line. REFUSE to spend it, and find alternatives that works. This is why God made etsy. And ebay. And craigslist, even. And the internet in general, including this site, where at any time you can pop in and ask any of us a question. I LIVE for wedding planning questions. Literally. Don’t give up. Giving up is stupid.

Will it be stressful? Well, of course. Yes, at some point, you’re going to want to run screaming away from everything. So, take a break, and run away. Your wedding will still be there when you return. Step back and remember what’s at the end of the aisle: Married to the love of your life, surrounded by your favorite people, eating cake, all while wearing a beautiful dress. When it’s over, you’re going to say to yourself, “wow, that went by really fast”, and it will. Enjoy it as much as you can, even if that means occasionally not dealing with it at all.

Did I mention all the pretty? Yes? Good. Did I mention how much fun you’re going to have? You are going to have such a good time. You are going to try on gorgeous dresses, and you’re going to have that Christmas Morning Moment when you see yourself in THE dress. You’re going to taste really good cake. You are going to laugh with the love of your life, and with your bridesmaids, and with your PHOTOGRAPHER even, over some inside joke, or something hilariously freaking funny/stupid thing one of you did or said. You will laugh about these for the rest of your life. On your wedding day, you will be surrounded by everyone you love and everyone who loves you. Your favorite music will be playing, your favorite foods will be served, and I’m not exactly sure what else you’ll need to have a great time. It’s all there for you.

And at the end of that aisle, you will have accomplished so much more than you ever thought you were capable of. You are going to feel like a Superstar. And you’re right. You are.

Your Wedding vs. The Holidays

Happy Holidays, everybody! Here's the re-post of the blog I wrote for HerFuture.com today:

So, the Holidays are now upon us, and you might be feeling some trepidation about seeing family and friends, and talking, talking about your wedding.

It is a truth universally recognized that weddings make families do the wacky. I've said and written it a million times. Here are some tips for getting through the wackiness during the holidays:

1. Remember that your family actually loves you. They do. They love you, and they want the best for you. They just think that what's best for you is what they think is best for you. Parents, especially, are used to guiding you and used to you having to listen to them. And that's whether it's about what time you need to go to bed to wake up early for school, or inviting your third cousin to your wedding. They are trying to create the best experience for you that they can. So, when cousin Trudy comes up for the third time during dinner, just think, "They are not trying to ruin my life, they are trying to help." Because they are. That being said...

2. Pressure is not priority. You do not have to do a darn thing any of them suggest. When a subject of conflict comes up, you have two choices, both of which work:

The first is to express extreme enthusiasm over your flower/linen/bridesmaid/meal/name change choice, and how you couldn't see it happening any other way. You are SOO happy with what you're doing! And you are, right? Very hard to keep pushing in the face of that.

The second is to put the discussion off. Tell them that, THANK GOODNESS, You do not have to finalize your decision on the flower/linen/bridesmaid/meal selection/name change choice until sometime in 2012, fortunately! So you have plenty of time.

3. Both options require immediately moving away after they are implemented. No, I'm serious. Smile, and GO.

I didn't say it would be easy, especially in the beginning, but I swear to you, it works. No crying, screaming, no "why do you ALWAYS do this??" has to be involved. Assert, smile, and leave the area ASAP. And head straight for the eggnog, if you have to.

This picture is on my website, and on my office wall. It sums up their wedding perfectly: Not just filled with love and affection, but fueled by Heineken, too. Nikki bounced around all night with that bottle (and a couple more like it) saying to me, "This is great. This wedding is exactly what I wanted my wedding to be." And I can never ask for any great praise than that, you know?

So, what happened here was, Jonathan stomped his foot on the cloth-covered glass...and it skidded right into the bushes. And this was their instant reaction. Love it. Review: David Tutera's My Fair Wedding 11/13/11

He's back! I've said it before - his is the only wedding show that I can watch. I love the whole idea of taking a bride's vision and just upgrading it into something wonderful. Most of the time, what they've started out with isn't bad, but with a little tweaking, it can be so SO much better. I'm a pretty good "editor" myself,and I have to confess that one of my favorite things as a planner is to say to a bride, "But you can also do it THIS way" and hear them say, "Ooh!" So, yes, I have a little bit of an ego, too!

So, this week, David is traveling to Topeka, KS. 17-year old Ryan, was diagnosed with cancer, and he was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His wish? Give his Mom, Wendy, the wedding of her dreams by bringing in David Tutera.
David walks into a room filled with Make a Wish volunteers wearing snazzy "Team Ryan" t-shirts. David's got one week to pull this off, so he's going to need all the help he can get. The president of the foundation, David Williams, explains that not all wish grantees are terminal patients (Ryan is currently in remission), which I didn't know, actually.
Kathy Griffin has this bit when she talks about Oprah - that people freak out when she enters the room - crying, screaming, jumping up and down. The same usually happens when brides open the door and David Tutera is on the other side. The 17-year old boy? Becomes monosyllabic. He's obviously in shock, but really happy.

The theme of her wedding: Origami cranes and Cherry blossoms. Wendy is looking for peace and calm, a real zen experience. She's made origami crane accessories for her bridesmaids, and favors for her guests - all 200 of them. Dinner will be a Chinese buffet catered by a local grocery store. And here comes the "Whaa?" Moment in David's head. He's trying not to judge, dude, TRYING not to judge, but his voice goes just a littlebithigher when he replies,"Sure!" Actually,on second thought, it's not judging, it's panic - a week out from her wedding, and all Wendy has shown him are accessories, centerpiece vases, and a pair of platinum pumps by Jessica Simpson. And the only thing that's finished are the pumps. If Wendy had her way, she'd like the room filled with cherry blossom trees and an aisle runner. Pretty simple and elegant.
BUT, her bridesmaids are wearing heavy black dresses,and Wendy's dress doesn't really fit very well. As David points out, neither really fit into her zen style.
Time to try on wedding dresses! Go to minute 19:56 to take a look at her choices. Wendy doesn't like the second dress, but is cool with the first and second one. When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, Wendy's got some great options, too. She really likes the dark gold floor-length dress, but I'm digging the dark red knee length gown.

Then we're off to tuxedos for Ryan and Rocky, Wendy's fiance. Rocky thinks the first tuxedo makes him look like a UPS truck driver. Hah! Ryan doesn't like the second tuxedo with the bow tie. Makes him think of James Bond. Wendy likes the third tuxedo with the long tie. What will David choose??

Now it's time to pick the favors. Wendy's favorite is a dollar coin that can be tossed in a wishing well and donated back to the Make a Wish Foundation. Not sure how that would work. Does Wendy buys the dollar coins, then basically she's making the donation, right? Although I doubt if she's paying for them...I'm thinking real world applications, and maybe I should just stop. Anyway, it's a very sweet idea,and, hey, wishing well in the middle of your wedding reception! That's pretty cool.

Dress Reveal! What do you think?

Go to 44:51 for the reveal of the reception. It's beautiful! Wood, live and silk cherry blossom stands. Orchids and Topiaries and custom made linens, table cloths and overlays in a green and gold color scheme. Again, very simple and very elegant. Because, really, each of these table set-ups is around $400 + each, easy.

The Best Day of Your Life? Nope, Can't Sell That.

Not with a straight face, that is. Because if your wedding day is the best day of your life, then you're screwed. Not just because of whatever life looked before, but what it's going to look like in the future. It might be one of the best days of your life, it should be a great day in your life but the best? Nah. Not if I have anything to say about it.

I love it because it totally sums up what their wedding felt like. Andrew's got a Heineken on his left (which I think I brought him) they're both really happy (Nikki spent a lot of time wandering around saying "This is EXACTLY what I wanted." Not making that up). Their family and friends are in the background having a good time, and in about 30 minutes the dance floor is going to be packed and rocking. It was a party. But really, it boils down to just the two of them, relaxed and happy.

So, I can't promise you the Best Day of Your Life. What I can promise is a great start: A day surrounded by everyone you love and who love you, with all of your favorite things, a wedding that is as unique and dynamic as you are. And when you look back on it, you'll do what I'm doing right now while I'm looking at this picture: Smiling.

Sue Ann and Mike Got Married!

...at Castaway Restaurant in Burbank on Saturday. And, as expected, it was clear and beautiful enough to see Downtown L.A. from their ceremony. Sue Ann and I are friends, so the great thing was that the rest of our friends were there too, ready to tear up the dancefloor. I think I might be getting used to this video thing. Or not:

Sue Ann and I planned her wedding in 5 months, which rocked. Sue Ann was so easy and such a joy to work with: "That, that, and that. Who do I write the check to?"
I know I say this every week, but I can't WAIT to see the pro-pictures. April Rocha shot their wedding, and as we all know, she's fantastic. Flowers once again admirably presented by Enchanted Florist. Anyone know of a class that will teach you how to take pictures with your iphone? Email me.

I was the kid who used to hold up a tape recorder to the radio when my favorite songs came on. The first thing I bought with my first paycheck at age 15 was a Shawn Colvin cd. I was and still am, a music addict. So, my gateway drug into Apple was the iPod. Download all my songs into a handy little machine and carry them with me everywhere? Yes, please. I didn't mind having to use itunes, because that was just a way to buy even more music, even quicker. Plus the ipod was so smooth and pretty and so easy to use - scroll down, click and listen. I was in love.

By the time I started my business I'd been using a smartphone, a Treo in this case, for years. But the iPhone, the iPhone, man, could play my music. And it allowed me to buy more music right from my phone! I could also go online, research anything, figure out how to get anywhere, and it was one step down from just carrying my computer around. It was the perfect for me, and everything that I had to do in my business and in my life.

And then one day it slipped out of my hands and thudded onto the pavement in a parking lot in Pasadena.

I was horrified. I was about two blocks away from the Apple store in Old Town, and I walked in literally on the verge of tears. I had never experienced such fantastic customer service in my life before - in 30 minutes they took the shattered phone from me, replaced it with a new one, connected it to my cell phone account and even gave me a case for it. All for free.

Whoa.

I asked my friends who had Mac computers and none of them were surprised by this. If they every had a problem with their Macbooks, which they hardly ever did, they took them into the Apple store and got free help. One of my friends had a problem with their hard drive and it was replaced, gratis, with an upgraded operating system. But they were expensive, I was warned. At least twice as much as a PC. I was on my second PC in three years, and had already experienced regular crashes and virus warnings. My friends didn't have those problems. Plus the Macs were just so...PRETTY. I saved up and got this baby six months later, refurbished (bet you didn't know you could save money doing that, huh?)

Yeah, they cost a lot. But they're worth it, for the service you get, for the absolute belief that if you have a problem, any problem, that you're going to be taken care of, as quickly as possible. I adore my husband, but he is a klutz. One of the reasons we rent a house rather than own one is that if we had to pay to fix everything he's broken, we would have filed for bankruptcy long ago. Zane could break water. He is also the only person I know who has managed to disable his Macbook - twice. And the Apple store has fixed and replaced it both times. The cost has been completely and totally worth the money, every time.

I got the iPad this year, and I use it run my weddings onsite, read books, and, of course, listen to music. Last week, I used it to video record footage of a wedding - multi-tasking at it's finest. Don't worry, though, I have a case for it!

As a wedding consultant, my goal is to always be worth the cost of the money, too. And the best way to do that is to give my brides the same level of customer service that Steve Jobs' company has always offered me. I found out a couple of weeks ago that the Apple employee manual has broken that policy down into the acronym A.P.P.L.E:

Approach customers with a warm welcome
Probe politely to understand all the customer’s needs
Present a solution for the customer to take home today
Listen for and resolve any issues or concerns
End with a fond farewell and an invitation to return

None of them - none of US - deserve anything less.

So, thanks for the music, Steve, thanks for the support, and thanks, most of all, for setting the standard. Godspeed.

My Post This Week on The Broke Ass Bride: Five Non-Hardcore Green Wedding Tips That You Might Actually Use

Every Friday I write a post on The Broke Ass Bride, one of the best places on the web for wedding tips, spend, splurge, or save! Green is definitely a big wedding thing these days. And, while most people would love to have a green wedding, there are also a lot of things that most people aren’t going to do either. Like, you might buy vintage or wedding rings or a pre-owned dress (says the wedding planner who had both), but you’re probably not going to send out plantable invitations. Which leads to another challenge: Getting your wedding guests to join in the greening too. That doesn’t always work. And a lot of green options can be expensive too. Seeking out soy based-inks? Hemp silk bridesmaid dresses? Taking the train to Vegas for your bachelorette party rather than flying or driving? Seriously?

Greening can be simple, and it can cheap, and it take very little extra effort on your part. In fact, it might save you some. Here’s what’s really worked with my brides:

It's easier than it looks.

ThePaperThePaperThePaperTHEPAPER!!! Gah! And it’s flying out in all directions! You’d send out e-invitations but you’re worried about your older relatives who don’t have email. Plus, the invitations are soo….pretty. Yeah, I know.

1. Sign up for a free wedding website that gives your guests the option to RSVP online. Type in “RSVP on your wedding website” on the search engine of your choice for a list. Put the wedding site address on your invitations, plus a contact phone number (this is where Google voice comes in handy). That’s two less pieces of paper that you’ll have to buy per household, plus the cost in return envelope stamps that you can put towards the cake. Or the bar, for that matter. I know what you’re thinking – what if everyone doesn’t RSVP online? Truth? Everyone isn’t going to send an RSVP card in, either. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to track down stragglers either way, so you might as well err on the side of your bank account and the environment.

2. Seek out e-options wherever else you can. I wrote about this a while back. Make cloud computing work for you. When you get a contract, upload into Google docs or the online storage of your choice. I’ve even taken a picture of my signature and turned into a jpb so I can insert it into pdfs and docs, but not everyone is the security daredevil that I am! Weddings can be VERY paper heavy, minimize where you can. Scan and email, baby. Speaking of which, get as many of your guests’ email addresses as you can. They will come in handy, trust me!

Greetings from the East Coast!

I'm in New York City right now, celebrating my Mom's birthday. We've been doing this every year for a while now, and we both love it. Yesterday we took a night time bus tour through the city and over the Brooklyn Bridge, with all of Manhattan lit up in it's glory. Pretty awesome. This a picture of the view from our hotel room. That's Sigourney Weaver's building from Ghostbusters on the right, there.

I was in D.C. over the weekend, and although New York was where I was born, D.C. is definitely my home town, you know? I got to do everything I wanted, walk 4 blocks from my hotel to the White House, hang out at my favorite coffee shop, have fun with my best friend, whose wedding I was there to attend. Best early birthday present to myself, ever. Yeah, I know - even my vacations involve weddings. No, I didn't help out. Much. ;-)

Getting into Google Docs. Guest lists, timelines, budgets, any document that you're going to have share with other people, you can just put it online. And if you're already usikng word and excel documents for this stuff, you can upload them onto google, they convert like a dream, Saves paper and saves time, and saves confusion, because it automatically saves what you have online, so it's easy to tell which is the latest version. The arch over the sweetheart's table was moved from the ceremony. Can The Enchanted Florist cook, or what?

Hotcakes Bakes provided this beautiful - and tasty - cake. They really do make some of the best tasting fondant in town. I would ask how, but that would probably be rude, you know?

Getting Your Guests to Dress the Part

Let’s face it—when it comes to your big day, you want everything to be perfect. You find the right venue, agonize over wedding colors, plan matching invitations and linens, and spend months looking for your dress—not to mention just about everything else. All the details are set, and you imagine walking down the aisle in your special day: the carefully-chosen flowers, the elaborate décor, your beautiful wedding gown… and Uncle Harry grinning at you in his favorite Hawaiian shirt, which is STILL stained from last summer’s cook-off. You try to ignore him and move on, but you just can’t help but notice your soon-to-be-husband’s college roommate in sweatpants (even though it’s been at least 5 years since he’s graduated), and your sister’s teenage son in his uniform of grimy ripped jeans. Talk about a ruined walk down the aisle. What happens when everything’s set, but the guests just don’t dress to impress?

We got that very question (regarding dress code and weddings) from one concerned bride. Jacqueline H. wrote, “What is a nice way to implement a dress code at the wedding? My wedding is a “casual wedding”, but I still want people to dress nicely.”

We went straight to our Marriage.com forums to see how engaged couples, expert wedding professionals, and married couples were responding:
One user, Amanda H., suggested that our bride-to-be include the dress code on the invitations directly—for example, “Please join us after the ceremony for our [insert phrasing for dress code] reception”. Amanda warned against saying formal, informal or casual—which can be very vague and not specific to guests at all. (What exactly do those terms mean anyways?) Instead she suggested terms like resort casual, cocktail attire, or business casual to give guests more detailed ideas. If you’re going to specify dress code, you might as well be specific—don’t leave your guests in the dark!

Linda M. brought up another great idea— using your wedding website and theme to inform your guests of the dress code. “[A wedding website] would be a good way to give people a vibe of what to expect at your wedding, thus giving them an idea of what to wear.” Linda definitely hit the nail on the head—if you unveil part of your theme for the wedding, guests will figure out quickly if you’re having a formal affair, more of a laidback cocktail soiree, or a fun rock & roll affair, as Linda mentioned.

But when it all comes down to the truth, guests will wear what they want to your wedding, and as Linda mentioned, “It [would be] unreasonable to enforce a dress code that is strict.” Do let the word out about your dress code (either formally by invitation, website, or by word of mouth) and then stop stressing! Although it is your special day, you can’t exactly control your guests, despite their fashion faux pas. If you’re still worried, just keep the photographers focused on you for your big day!

A Love Letter to the Summer Brides

I wrote this on The Broke Ass Bride just about a year ago, and it still rings true. Oh, and the picture is by Sun-Dance photography. Click on it and see more of her magic, too.

So, it’s June, which means that between now and Labor Day, which is like, tomorrow, practically, a whole bunch of you are finally – finally - going to walk down the aisle. All the plans you’ve made over the past months… heck, years even, are about to come to fruition, right in front of your very eyes. The Marines call a soldier near the end of their tour of duty a “short timer”, and right now, you’re so short, I can’t even see you. It’s almost over.

Whew!

And, Awww…

Whichever you choose, either the “Whew!” or the “Awww…" or somewhere in between (or both) you have to admit that it’s been quite an experience, hasn’t it? You’ve learned a lot. You’ve not only figured out all this wedding stuff works, but you’ve also found out more about yourself, what you want, and even more importantly, since you’re going to be hanging out with this guy for the rest of your life, how the two of you work together as a team.

What else have you learned? You’ve certainly had many chances to practice and improve your “people” skills, not to mention managing your time . You’ve learned how to negotiate, how to compromise, and how to – and how not to – stick to a budget. At this point, you can rapidly calculate 5 – 18% of anything. At the beginning of this whole thing, you were wondering where to start and how to start, and GAH, frustration! But look at you now – you found your venue, you found your dress, you found your photographer and got through your engagement shoot, you found everything else you needed and wanted. And you learned that all it takes to get that is perseverance and patience, and raising your hand and asking questions that you don’t know the answers to. And you got from there to here more or less in one piece, just like I knew you would. You are a frickin’ Rock Star, and you can do anything. Remember that.

“But, Liz!” you say. “I’ve still got a checklist a mile long, and no time to finish it. I’m more stressed out than ever!” Well, yeah.

First of all, if you need some help, you know who to ask. :-)

But most importantly, when it does get to be too much, think about all the cool moments you’ve had along the way: When you tried on your last wedding dress and knew it was the one. The inside joke you and your guy now have because of something the caterer said. The way your stomach hurt after laughing your way through your bridal shower. And smile.

And then think about what your wedding day is going to be like: The look on his face when he sees you coming down the aisle in THE dress. All the people that you’re so excited to see because you haven’t been in the same room with them for years. Slow-dancing with your husband to your favorite song. How good dinner is going to taste when you execute Rule #3. Think about the music, think about the joy in the room, think that when it’s all said and done, you’re going to be married to the love of your life, and you’ve had a great party to celebrate it. Do me a favor – at some point during the reception, take a good look around the room and soak it in. It’s all there for you. Oh, sorry, one more favor – Enjoy it.

My Wedding Weekend

Well, yeah, I relaxed some this weekend. Saw the Hangover 2 (pretty much the same as the last one, still fun, just not as funny), barbecue at my best friend's house on Sunday, slept in on Monday (ahhh). But somewhere in there I met with three brides, hit both Alfred Angelo and David's Bridal, constructed two wedding day timelines. What DOES bored feel like? Hope I never have to find out...and just in case you're wondering? The Vera Wang Collection at David's Bridal is pretty choice.

Over at EMP Studios, Joel has put up some fantastic pictures for Jill and Erez's wedding at the Natural History Museum in January, which I coordinated. Such a great couple - Jill is pretty much my personal hero - and you'll love the pics. Enjoy!

My Wedding Weekend

One of the great things about this gig is that it is so PRETTY. On Saturday, I dropped by Alina Pizzano's Collection Release party. Delicious food by Pop Champagne and the dresses, the dresses...

Alina based this collection on the work of architect Frank O. Gehry, who designed the Disney Hall, downtown. It's also a very popular place for engagement photo sessions, actually. THIS one was my favorite, all drapsy and trailing and ethereal. Built-in corset, too.

On Sunday, I was in Corona with my September bride. She has a friend who owns this beautiful mansion in Corona. Fantastic views, Waterfall pool. This is going to be fantastic.

Later on Sunday, I hung with Dana, The Broke Ass Bride herself, before her surgery next week. Sushi and Sake bombs and karaoke, so, as you can imagine, a good time was had by all. Engagement Pictures And How to Swing Them

So, what's the point of taking engagement pictures? In the past three months, I've had three couples who've asked me that, because they were about to go in front of the cameras for the first time. And that's one of the points of engagement pictures - that it IS your first time in front of the cameras. It's good preparation for your wedding day, when you're going to be on display all day, mostly with a lense in your face.

Your engagement session is also a great time to become familiar with your photographer and how they work, and for them to become familiar with you. Once again, it's going to be all day with them in your face, giving you and your friend's directions. It's also a good reason, and a good idea, to schedule your hair and make-up trial, so you'll know how you're going to look that day, too.

Brandi and Kendell and Nikki and Andrew and Laurie and Luke were all nervous before their sessions, but look how wonderful theirs turned out! At the end of the day, you're more comfortable with each other, more comfortable with your photographer, and you have a set of fantastic pictures of the two of you as a couple.

My Wedding Weekend

Sigh. It's official, I have a girl crush on Kate Middleton.
I so, totally, did not mean to stay up to watch the Royal Wedding. I didn't. 4am Pacific Time? Noooo. The night after staying out all night with the Broke Ass Bride Brigade, after seeing Bridesmaids (which was hysterical, BTW) Nope. And then it hit me - That's 1am EST...and I have an east coast cable feed. So, there I was. And I loved every single minute of it.

From a wedding planner's point of view, it was flawless. The bride was supposed to arrive at the Cathedral at 11am, and her car pulled up exactly as the clock tower struck. Everything was on time and spot on. No wardrobe malfunctions, no mis-pronounced names, and even the kids behaved (at least until the photos were taken). The "herding cats" factor must have been insane, we're talking Secret Service levels - the groom gets two watchers, the bride gets three, something like that. However many people were needed to pull it off, they did a fantastic job. I hope someone bought the wedding planner a few rounds of drinks at the end of the night!

I was talking to my friend Jen from B&G Photography the next day about the couple themselves, and how comfortable they were with each other. Even with literally billions of people watching, and being shoved from point A to point B, they were, well, William and Kate. Clearly on the same page, clearly friends, clearly not just loving each other but liking each other. We can tell. It wasn't her wedding, it wasn't his wedding, it was their wedding.

The rest of my weekend was all about the flowers - Enchanted Florist for my July and November brides, and The Flower Garden for another July Bride. My big push is coming up soon, and it's time to dot the i's and cross the t's and give my brides their own perfect wedding days. Stay tuned.

My Wedding Weekend

Nikki and Andrew got married! So, that was pretty much my weekend. :-) For some more great pics of them, check out B&G's Facebook page.

The wedding could not have gone better - full dance floor (at one point, Andrew was breakdancing, or at least attempting to), busy bar, and beautiful, beautiful weather. Nikki kept wandering around saying, "This is perfect, this is exactly what I wanted," which is, you know, WEDDING PLANNER WIN.

Molly's Favorite Engagement Shoot Places

Ah, Molly Ann, she of my favorite Ring Shot ever. Take it away:

In the earlier days of my wedding photography career, I used to have two or three favorite sites to photograph engagement sessions. The light and backgrounds were always great and I knew where to go and how to pose the couple so that I'd get solid imagery out of them every single time. After a few sessions, however, it started to get boring! All my pictures had different couples rotating through the same scenery which meant that yes, the sites may be beautiful, but they were simply no longer challenging to me. And on top of that, occasionally we'd bump into other photographers also in the middle of portrait or engagement sessions, and inwardly I was embarrassed and concerned that my couples might deem their engagement pictures not so unique and as special if they were obviously taken at a portrait hotspot. Overall, I didn't feel that the method was very personal to the couple, nor as stimulating as it could be for me.

So now instead of pushing the beach or a local meadow, I ask the couple what they like to do together, and then try to build a session around that, wherever it happens to be. Wendy & Sean enjoy playing video games together, and camping at Joshua Tree, so we photographed a morning video game tournament in their own home in Costa Mesa, and then the two of them in and around the rugged desert landscape at Joshua Tree National Park...which is gorgeous, by the way.
And to think I never would have had the chance to photograph a destination engagement session in beautiful Joshua Tree if I'd steered the couple towards my preferred local photo locations! In addition to that, this approach also challenges me creatively. I mean, how the heck do you make great pictures of a video game tournament in an uncontrolled home environment?

I will say that it obviously helps when the couple puts some thought into the session as well. Cat & Dylan had several beautiful sites that were special to them, but ultimately settled on Chapman University where they met, in part because it is a photogenic location with fabulous newer buildings and plenty of visual texture, so it was sentimental to the couple and great for photographs.

Of course, we did meet another photographer taking pictures of a couple while on campus (did I mention Chapman is a photogenic location?), but it did not concern me nearly as much as before, because now we were at a site that was of the client's choosing, and its romantic value was not likely to diminish just because someone else also had engagement pictures taken there. And the other couple did not venture inside Chapman's law library to continue the session, which was why it was very important to Chapman law-alumnus Cat. If we had picked Chapman just "because it is pretty", then the session would have yielded far less unique results!

When discussing sites with couples now, I ask them where they met, what they like to do together, where their first date was, where he proposed, or where they like to hang out. Some people, like my friend Trevor, take it a step further and commission us to photograph the proposal itself!

The result is pictures in a location that ties the entire relationship together; Trevor and Angela's first date was at Disneyland, and it was also where Trevor proposed, and now it's also where we made memorable images of them enjoying their newly-engaged status!

I guess you could say my favorite engagement locations are everywhere. Scenic and attractive is good, scenic and attractive AND special to the couple is better. When those three attributes meet for an engagement session, everybody wins!

In addition to personalizing happy couples' engagement sessions in and around Orange County, she and Matt have also been commissioned for weddings and destination events in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Napa, and as far away as Greece.

Jen's Favorite Engagement Shoot Places

Another one of my favorite photographers, JenBerggren of B & G Photography , weighs in with her favorite places to shoot engagement pictures:

Honestly, my favorite spots to shoot are places than mean something to my clients. A favorite place they like to hang/hike/do whatever, their first date spot or a spot that inspires them. I find the more the couple has a connection to where we shoot, the more comfortable they are and the more natural shots I can get of them. If they have ideas of a kind of vibe or place they'd like like to shoot, but aren't sure exactly where, here's a go to list of a few of my favorite spots to shoot, in no particular order...

1. Walt Disney Hall. Fabulous architecture and light, nice neutral background color, so many nooks & crannies to find and shoot in and around.

2. Franklin Canyon. When lush and green are what is wanted, this is such a sweet spot. A park that is small enough to cover in 1-1.5 hours and has so many different spots to really mix up the look of the shoot.

3. El Matador. When the beach is a must do spot, then El Matador it is. Very few people to work around (much more private than Santa Monica Beach), large rocks & sea caves and a beautiful grassy wildflower spot to mix things up a bit. It's worth the drive to get there.

4. Union Station. This deco building is beautiful. And you get a great mix of that amazing waiting area, some outdoor space and the tracks. Amazing spot.

5. UCLA. Beautiful buildings, great grassy areas, botanical garden. And it's 2 minutes from our place. Can't beat that! :)

My Wedding Weekend

...was mostly rained out. I met with a potential bride on Saturday at The Grove, and then spent the rest of the day at Cost Plus looking for chairs at the new office. On Sunday, I was supposed to go up to Calamigos Ranch for a site visit until they told me not to come because the roads were flooded. Between you and me, I was a little relieved, because it was pretty biblical out there, you know.

Today? I have a wedding at Trump Golf this weekend, so there's 5,000 things to do for that. Well, most of it's been done, so, like, 1500 things. I'm getting the office painted this morning, I have another potential bride meeting this afternoon, and the Wedding Salon is tonight.
